CAPSTONE OVERVIEW

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (U.S. DHHS, 2021a) in 2020, there were 407,493 children in the foster system with their median age being 7.7 years old.
Children who have experienced trauma have a higher risk for psychiatric disorders, as well as medical disorders such as cardiovascular issues, diabetes, or asthma (Cross et al., 2017; Nemeroff, 2016).
Trauma can alter the brain structures associated with mood and emotional regulation (Cross et al., 2017; Nemeroff, 2016). These altered brain structures, in combination with the lack of or limited positive modeling of emotional regulation, can lead to years or lifelong inability to regulate themselves.

POTENTIAL SITES

Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center CHECK Foster Care Clinic

Hope's Closet (Fairfield, OH)

No Capstone site has been decided on at this time. Both options listed above are in the Cincinnati area and focused on working with foster children and their families. My goal for Capstone is to expand occupational therapy's presence in the foster system and expand the services foster children receive.
